Wow! As we wrap up this lengthy remodel I wanted to reflect on what we did. 5315 needed to be updated in absolutely every way we could think of, and it took a considerable amount of effort. I would like to start from the top down, from the bedrooms to basement.
Starting with 3 side by side bedrooms sharing 1 bathroom means we needed to make the bathroom shine! We did just that! With all new counters, floors, bathtub/shower, and toilet. There are a few surprises as well such as special night lighting and timers attached to the lights and fan. After that we needed to refurbish the bedrooms with new carpets, paint and fixing up the closets. They needed new windows to make it more energy efficient as well.
This and the basement are where we could really add value to the property! This confined space really needed to be opened up, so we took part of a wall out. Now it is an open flowing concept between the entry way, living room, dining room, and kitchen. We were so relieved to have this space open up as it really makes the house feel like a home. As you enter the new wood flooring creates a clean, warm feeling to the home. The kitchen is my second favorite part of this project, with granite and quarts counter tops that alternate seamlessly with the backslash it is a beautiful design. Stainless steel appliances are a standard for new homes and we keep with that recent tradition.
After the kitchen the dining room with bar attached is an excellent transition from chef to host. With plenty of space to fit a large family table this room is perfect for larger family meals. The living room sits adjacent and has one large window overlooking the porch and front of the house. The view continues to the Vernon elementary school that sits across the street.
The last room before heading to the basement is the brand new bathroom…everything in this room is new! Paint, floor, vanity, toilet, back splash are all brand new and look amazing!
This is my favorite part of the whole project!!! We dug deeper and finished the unfinished basement, this space is so versatile now has a full kitchenette, full bathroom and large bedroom. It is a space unto itself, be it a man cave, in law suite, or just another bedroom it can adapt well to almost any role. This new design of bathroom has floors grated to have an open shower concept (there is still a privacy blind) but no lip to get in and out of the shower. This coupled with the built in shelving and bench makes it my favorite bathroom in the project as well. As you venture out of the bathroom the large living room/kitchenette greats you as a wonderful living space to fit any hobby or relaxation. Then move past the living room the the large bedroom and big closet. Essentially the basement is as large as the main floor but broken into 2 large rooms and 1 bathroom vs 5 rooms (entry, kitchen, living, dining room, bathroom) which makes each room feel very large even though they don’t have the same open concept as the main floor.
The location is one of the most amazing parts of this property! It sits on 20th avenue between the growing Alberta street and Killingsworth. Just 2 blocks from the famous ice cream parlor, the Salt and Straw, my diet thanks me for not keeping this home for myself! The Redeemer Lutheran church are your neighbors on one side and across the street is Vernon Elementary school. It is a great wholesome place to raise a family and to work off all that ice cream just head half a block up the street is the MASSIVE 6 block Alberta Park!
